"Reindeer Lichen" is a threatened species, although many of these are found in many areas. This is found in almost all of North America in many different species and mostly wet places. In the Ozarks, they are found around seeps and springs. An amazing quality of this plant is that it can take very hot weather and very cold weather also.
I grabbed this black & white while roaming around the Smith Creek Preserve in Newton County on a cold February morning of 2008. I found it well above the creek bed in a pool of water possibly fed by a spring or runoff from the surrounding mountains.
Smith Creek is popular for its huge boulders, numerous small waterfalls, cascades, and sping wildflowers. Thea area is also home to the largest colony of Indiana bats in Arkansas. To reach Smith Creek from the Boxley Valley area, drive south, around 3 miles from the Boxley Baptist Church, and look for the entrance, red gate, and parking area on the left.
