Artist's Description

"Hell on the Border", as inmates called it, was a primitive jail serving the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas. The basement housed prisoners in the late 1800's. Judge Issac C. Parker, famously nicknamed the "Hanging Judge", presided over the courtroom in the same building from 1875-1889. The unpopularity of the jail's conditions led to construction of a newer, more acceptable facility in 1887. The building was used as a federal jail until the early 1900's. Events at this historical landmark also inspired the 1969 John Wayne Classic "True Grit".
